Huell Howser: A True Californian At Heart

He may have been a Tennessee native, but Huell Howser was admired for knowing all about California on his KCET/PBS travel show, “California’s Gold.” Howser passed away today at the age of 67. For 20 years, he educated viewers on the golden state; highlighting small towns, landmarks and events, often speaking to locals. He truly loved California. “We operate on the premise that TV isn’t brain surgery. People’s stories are what it’s all about,” Howser had said. “If you have a good story, it doesn’t have to be overproduced. I want our stories to reveal the wonders of the human spirit and the richness of life in California, including its history, people, culture and natural wonders.”

In addition to being a TV personality, Howser produced shows including California’s Golden Parks, California’s Water, Visiting… with Huell Howser, Our Neighborhoods, The Bench, Road Trip, “California’s Golden Fairs,” and various specials. Howser moved to Los Angeles in 1981 to work as a reporter for KCBS-TV. This past Fall, he had announced his retirement from TV. Howser will be greatly missed and his work will live on. http://www.calgold.com/
