Mayor Karen Bass has lifted the curfew for Downtown Los Angeles following continuing successful crime prevention and suppression efforts.
Effective today, Tuesday, June 17, the curfew is lifted from within Downtown Los Angeles. Mayor Bass instituted the curfew with support from elected, law enforcement and business leaders seven days ago.
“The curfew, coupled with ongoing crime prevention efforts, have been largely successful in protecting stores, restaurants, businesses and residential communities from bad actors who do not care about the immigrant community,” Mayor Bass said. “I am lifting the curfew effective today, and as we continue quickly adapting to chaos coming from Washington, and I will be prepared to reissue a curfew if needed. My priority will continue to be ensuring safety, stability and support in the Downtown neighborhoods.”
Yesterday, Mayor Bass reduced the curfew hours as part of a phased approach, following a marked reduction in acts of violence, vandalism and looting that happened during the immediate escalation of the situation by the Trump Administration. The curfew area previously covered Downtown Los Angeles, representing less than eight square miles of the city.
“The curfew has been an effective tool in helping us maintain public safety in the Downtown Los Angeles area and deter those looking to exploit peaceful protests for criminal activity. The LAPD will maintain a strong presence in the area and continue to monitor conditions closely to protect lives, uphold the right to lawful assembly, and safeguard property,” said LAPD Chief of Police Jim McDonnell.
Last week, Mayor Bass announced that the city’s law enforcement and first responders were operating in a unified command structure to strengthen coordination and help keep people safe. Hundreds of officers from police and sheriffs departments from across the region and state were working alongside LAPD over the weekend. On Saturday, more than 15 protests took place across the City of Los Angeles, and more than 30,000 people peacefully demonstrated in Downtown L.A. to voice their calls to stop the reckless raids and raise awareness about the anti-democratic policies coming out of Washington.
