New Study Reveals the Best and Worst U.S. Cities for a Digital Detox

In a world driven by screens and constant connectivity, a new report from Upgraded Points is offering relief for those seeking a true digital detox. The study ranks 100 U.S. cities based on their ability to help visitors disconnect from devices and reconnect with nature, peace, and wellness.

“As screen fatigue reaches epidemic levels, more travelers are seeking vacations where Wi-Fi is optional and fresh air is mandatory,” said Keri Stooksbury, editor-in-chief at Upgraded Points. “This report highlights the best destinations in America to log off, look up, and truly recharge.”

Upgraded Points analyzed 100 U.S. cities known for their park access (sourced from the Trust for Public Land), scoring them across 14 criteria related to screen-free travel. The factors ranged from 5G coverage and internet speed to hiking trail density, light pollution, and the availability of off-grid Airbnb listings, wellness centers, and spas. Each category was rated on a 0–5 scale, with total scores normalized on a 100-point scale—higher scores reflecting better digital detox conditions.

Top 5 U.S. Cities for a Digital Detox

  1. Colorado Springs, Colorado (Score: 63.8)
With 56 miles of trails per 100,000 residents and over 60 off-the-grid Airbnbs, Colorado Springs combines nature access with limited digital distractions. The city also boasts 13 wellness centers per 100,000 people, perfect for unplugging in style.

  2. Boise, Idaho (Score: 62.9)
Boise keeps connectivity low (only 34% 5G coverage) while offering rich outdoor options and dark skies ideal for stargazing. Affordable off-grid stays and 66 miles of trails per capita make it a haven for screen-free serenity.

  3. Henderson, Nevada (Score: 62.7)
A desert escape with 157 off-grid cabins and 90 trail miles per 100,000 people, Henderson offers access to nature and wellness—without the overwhelming digital footprint.

  4. North Las Vegas, Nevada (Score: 62.4)
Often overlooked, North Las Vegas dedicates a quarter of its land to parks and delivers 188 off-grid stays per 100,000 residents. Pair that with abundant spas and wellness options, and you’ve got a surprisingly peaceful retreat in the desert.

  5. Madison, Wisconsin (Score: 61.3)
Madison balances low light pollution with off-grid charm, boasting over 4.5 community gardens per 100,000 people and dozens of remote Airbnb listings with stellar reviews.

Cities Where Digital Detox Is Harder to Find

While some cities shine for digital disconnection, others struggle to escape the digital noise. The five lowest-ranking cities in the study are:

  • Newark, New Jersey – Score: 21.1

  • Jersey City, New Jersey – Score: 23.9

  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Score: 27.2

  • Miami, Florida – Score: 28.5

  • Chicago, Illinois – Score: 30.2

These urban centers tend to have high connectivity, limited off-grid options, and lower access to nature-focused resources, making them less ideal for screen-free travel.
