Netflix has announced Unaccustomed Earth, a new eight-episode drama series starring Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire, Mr. Malcolm’s List) as Parul Chaudhury. Inspired by Jhumpa Lahiri’s internationally acclaimed short story collection, the series comes from showrunner and writer Madhuri Shekar (3 Body Problem, The Nevers), with direction by Ritesh Batra (The Lunchbox) and executive production from John Wells (The Pitt, Shameless).
Set within the elite and insular Indian-American community of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Unaccustomed Earth is a sweeping, culturally rich drama exploring themes of love, desire, family, and identity. At its center is a forbidden romance between a devoted wife and her long-lost love—an affair that threatens to upend generations of loyalty and expectation.
The show is produced by Warner Bros. Television and boasts a powerhouse creative team. Executive producers include Shekar, Wells, Batra, Lahiri, Nisha Ganatra, Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow, and Celia Costas. Batra will also direct and executive produce the first two episodes.
With layered storytelling and a vibrant ensemble of characters, Unaccustomed Earth promises to deliver a dramatic, emotionally charged look at the complexities of immigrant life and the human heart.
