Twitter Increases Character Limit From 140 to 280

twitter characters

You have more to say… always! But Twitter limits you to 140 characters.

Now, all of that is changing. According to Twitter's blog, the social media platform wants people around the world to easily express themselves on Twitter. Therefore, they are testing out a longer limit, allowing 280 characters, in languages impacted by cramming (which is all except Japanese, Chinese, and Korean).

Currently, only a select few have the ability to test out the new feature.

According to Twitter research, a small percent of Tweets sent in Japanese have 140 characters (only 0.4%). But in English, a much higher percentage of Tweets have 140 characters (9%). Most Japanese Tweets are 15 characters while most English Tweets are 34.
