Scooby-Doo Origins Begins Production at Netflix with Live-Action Cast

Netflix is officially bringing one of pop culture’s most beloved mystery-solving teams back to life. Production has begun in Atlanta, Georgia on Scooby-Doo: Origins, a live action series that revisits the early days of the iconic franchise with a modern lens.

At the center of the story is a fresh take on the beloved characters that have defined generations of fans. Mckenna Grace steps into the role of Daphne Blake, joined by Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones. Paul Walter Hauser also stars in the series, adding further intrigue to the ensemble.

The series follows a compelling origin story rooted in friendship, secrets, and the supernatural. During their final summer at camp, longtime friends Shaggy and Daphne find themselves pulled into a chilling mystery involving a lonely lost Great Dane puppy—one that may have witnessed a supernatural murder. As the mystery deepens, they are joined by Velma, a pragmatic and scientifically minded townie, and Freddy, a charismatic newcomer whose presence raises as many questions as answers. Together, the group must unravel a case that quickly spirals into a nightmare, threatening to expose hidden truths each of them would rather keep buried.

Behind the scenes, the series is led by showrunners, writers, and executive producers Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, working under Midnight Radio. The creative team also includes executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson. Toby Haynes will direct the first episode, setting the tone for the series.

For more than half a century, Scooby-Doo has remained a cultural mainstay. With three theatrical films, more than a dozen animated series, and nearly 40 animated home entertainment releases, the Mystery Inc. gang continues to resonate with audiences across generations. This latest reimagining aims to build on that legacy while introducing a darker, more character-driven narrative for a new era.

Netflix continues to expand its Atlanta-based production slate with Scooby-Doo: Origins, joining titles such as Stranger Things, His & Hers, and upcoming projects including ’Tis So Sweet, All the Sinners Bleed, A Different World, Where There’s Smoke, and Sweet Magnolias Season 5.

Produced by Warner Bros. Television, Scooby-Doo: Origins signals a bold new chapter for the franchise—one that leans into its mystery roots while exploring the emotional and psychological layers behind the formation of Mystery Inc.
