The artists behind some of television’s most memorable looks took center stage over the weekend as the 78th Emmy Awards kicked off with two nights of Creative Arts ceremonies at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Held September 5 and 6, the Creative Arts Emmys recognize the artists, technicians and craftspeople whose work brings television productions to life, with awards spanning makeup, hairstyling, costume design, cinematography, production design, music, editing and more.
In the beauty categories, Apple TV’s “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” scored two major wins, taking Outstanding Contemporary Makeup (Non-Prosthetic) and Outstanding Contemporary Hairstyling. Makeup artists Erin Ayanian Monroe, Michele Teleis, Bonni Flowers, Valli O’Reilly and Angela Levin were recognized for their work on the series, while Jaime Leigh McIntosh led the winning hairstyling team.
“The Pitt” earned Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for its episode “9:00 P.M.” The winning team included department head makeup artist Myriam Arougheti, prosthetic designer Arjen Tuiten and special makeup effects artists Thom Floutz, Chris Burgoyne, Martina Sykes and Hanny Tjan.
“Palm Royale” won Outstanding Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Makeup (Non-Prosthetic), with department head makeup artist Tricia Sawyer leading the team. The Apple TV series also took Outstanding Period Costumes.
Netflix’s “Bridgerton” received the Emmy for Outstanding Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Hairstyling, while “RuPaul’s Drag Race” was recognized for Outstanding Hairstyling for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program. Suzette Boozer served as department head hairstylist on the winning “Drag Race” entry.
Costume honors also went to “Fallout” for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes and “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” for Outstanding Contemporary Costumes for a Series. Netflix’s “Beef” won Outstanding Contemporary Costumes for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
The Creative Arts ceremonies were just the beginning of Emmy season. Highlights from both nights will air September 12 on FXX, with the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards airing live September 14 on NBC and Peacock.
