First Looks At Writer-Director John Ridley’s “All Is By My Side,” The Jimi Hendrix Biopic Starring Outkast’s Andre 3000

Two clips from the Jimi Hendrix biopic “All Is By My Side,” starring Outkast’s Andre Benjamin (aka: Andre 3000), has surfaced online ahead of the film’s SXSW screening. In the first video, Benjamin’s Hendrix is shown flirting with Imogen Poots’ Linda Keith, onetime girlfriend of Keith Richards, who inspired songs by both men. The two are also shown talking about going to Monterey, as Hendrix marvels at the lineup. In the second video, Hendrix is meeting with a prospective manager in a restaurant, who’s encouraging him to go to London. “I’ve heard pretty much everything there is to hear, and I’ve got to say you’re taking it, you’re tearing it apart in your hands, man. Jesus Christ, no one’s got you signed,” the prospective manager says. Later, Hendrix says he doesn’t want to get caught up in the labels or cages of particular genres. “It’s not about style. I want my music to go inside the soul of a person,” Hendrix says. “For me, it’s colors. I want people to feel the music the same way I see it. It’s just colors; that’s it, and the rest is just painted with a little science fiction here and there.” The film was written and directed by “12 Years a Slave” screenwriter John Ridley and premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. It doesn’t yet have a U.S. release date, but Open Road is distributing the film.
