Marilyn Monroe’s iconic gowns and fashion on display at Academy Museum

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is honoring one of Hollywood’s most enduring legends with the upcoming exhibition, Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon.

Opening May 31, 2026, the exhibition celebrates the life and legacy of Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926.

The exhibition explores Monroe not only as a celebrated actress, but also as a visionary image-maker who carefully shaped her public persona during the height of Hollywood’s studio era. Through hundreds of original objects, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of Monroe’s role in crafting the image that would make her one of the most recognizable stars in entertainment history.

Among the items on display are posters, portraits, photographs, production documents, letters, and rarely seen personal materials, many of which will be exhibited publicly for the first time. The exhibition will also feature an extensive collection of Monroe’s screen-worn costumes spanning her career, from a dress worn in Love Happy to wardrobe pieces from her final and unfinished film, Something’s Got to Give.

Highlights include two costumes designed by legendary costume designer Orry-Kelly for Some Like It Hot, along with the rarely exhibited pink gown created by William Travilla for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, one of Monroe’s most iconic looks.

Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon is curated by Associate Curator Sophia Serrano with Curatorial Assistant Simran Bhalla. The exhibition will remain on view through February 28, 2027.

Tickets to the museum are available through advance online reservations via the Academy Museum website and mobile app. General admission is $25 for adults, $19 for seniors ages 62 and older, and $15 for students. Admission is free for visitors ages 17 and younger, as well as California residents with an EBT card.

The Academy Museum is open six days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed on Tuesdays.
