Mayor Bass joined Project Street Vet, a nonprofit that provides veterinary care for pet families experiencing homelessness or housing vulnerability, at an interim-housing site in Harbor City that serves unhoused Angelenos as part of Mayor Bass’ Inside Safe program. 31 cats and dogs received veterinary services, including: general check-ups, vaccines, flea/tick prevention, spay & neuter vouchers, and referrals for continued care by Project Street Vet team members, including volunteer veterinarians. B-roll is available here.
“When unhoused Angelenos can stay united with their pets they are more likely to come inside and stay housed,” said Mayor Bass. “Through the continued collaboration between Inside Safe and Project Street Vet, I look forward to housing even more Angelenos, and ensuring these beloved companions get the care they need.”
Project Street Vet was founded on the inspiring work of Dr. Kwane Stewart, who for years has provided direct vet-to-pet services by walking city streets to identify unhoused pet families in need of care. Dr. Stewart was honored as CNN’s 2023 Hero of the Year for his relentless work, his compassion, and his guiding motto of “No Judgment. Just Help.”
The Mayor’s Inside Safe program has conducted nearly 120 encampment resolutions across the city, helping bring inside thousands in the process. Under Mayor Bass, Los Angeles has seen its first consecutive two-year decline in homelessness. This comprehensive approach to homelessness also focuses on preventing Angelenos from falling into homelessness in the first place. Mayor Bass has taken the following actions to continue supporting Angelenos:
-
Accelerating the development of more than 40,000 affordable housing units.
-
Implementing a research-proven anti-eviction program through the Mayor’s Fund, preventing Angelenos from falling into homelessness.
-
Advancing innovative housing solutions through LA4LA, expanding the ability to build housing on City land.
