Law enforcement officials say New York fashion designer Kate Spade was found dead in her apartment in an apparent suicide, according to The Associated Press.
The famed designer, best known for her handbags, was discovered on Tuesday morning in her New York City home. Her death is reported as an apparent suicide.
According to a New York Police Department spokesman, a housekeeper discovered Spade, who was "unconscious" and "unresponsive" in her Park Avenue apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene. Spade was 55 years-old.
Kate Spade launched her handbag line in 1993 with Andy Spade. The brand expanded to clothing, jewelry and more.
In 1999, Kate and Andy sold a majority stake of the company to Neiman Marcus, according to CNBC.
In 2007, the brand was then sold for $125 million to a group then known as Liz Claiborne. In 2017, the brand was sold again to Coach for $2.4 billion. According to reports, both founders did not benefit from the last and final sale.
Remembering the fashion designer, many took to twitter to share their thoughts and condolences.
FIDM tweeted, "Rest In Peace to a designer that brought so much color and vibrancy to the fashion world. #KateSpade"
