Industry Notes: Netflix Expands Its Slate, HBO Max Sets a Streaming Premiere, and Award-Winning Films Find New Homes

Netflix continues to broaden its programming slate with a series of high-profile announcements spanning romance, drama, creator partnerships and digital-first talent, while HBO Max, Greenwich Entertainment and JustWatch each revealed notable industry developments this week.

Netflix unveiled additional casting for its adaptation of Canadian author Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel This Summer Will Be Different. French-Canadian actress Sophie Nélisse (Yellowjackets, Heated Rivalry) has been cast as Lucy, the story’s lead, while Francesca Reale (Stranger Things, Do Revenge) will portray Bridget and Roby Attal (The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Sex Lives of College Girls) joins as Bridget’s brother, Felix, known as “Wolf.”

Based on Fortune’s contemporary romance novel, This Summer Will Be Different follows Lucy, a young woman navigating her twenties and her first true love with her best friend’s brother—the one person she was never supposed to fall for. Set across multiple summers on Prince Edward Island, the series is described as a simmering, sun-soaked romance. Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart serve as creators and showrunners, with Carley Fortune among the executive producers. Produced by Sphere Media, the series will film on Prince Edward Island and in Toronto, joining Netflix’s expanding Canadian production slate that includes North of North, Wayward, Who Killed the Montreal Expos?, BELOW and The Granville Girls.

Netflix also expanded the cast of its upcoming limited series Enigma Variations, based on André Aciman’s bestselling novel. Riley Keough will play Maud, Devon Terrell joins as Manfred, Nicholas Podany has been cast as Harlan, and Carl Clemons-Hopkins will portray Noah. The newly announced cast joins previously revealed stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alicia Vikander. The limited series follows one man’s emotional journey through six transformative years as he is shaped by the relationships that define his life, exploring themes of masculinity, sexuality and modern love. Amanda Kate Shuman serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Oliver Hermanus directing and executive producing for Media Res.

Netflix is also expanding its collaboration with acclaimed storyteller Connor Hines. Fresh off his first Emmy nomination for Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, Hines will create Jupiter Island, a drama produced with A24 that marks the first series under his new creative partnership with Netflix. Set on an ultra-exclusive island where professional golfers reign supreme, the series centers on a secret that threatens to unravel the community’s carefully curated world. Julie Gardner executive produces through Bad Wolf America. In announcing the project, Hines said he has lived with the world of Jupiter Island for some time and is excited to bring it to life alongside Netflix, A24 and Gardner. Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for the U.S. and Canada, Jinny Howe, praised Hines’ character-driven storytelling and said his recent Emmy recognition signals the beginning of an exciting creative partnership.

Netflix also announced a major partnership with digital creators Alex and Alan Stokes, better known as the Stokes Twins. Boasting more than 160 million subscribers across their platforms, the duo will bring an archive of their most popular content to Netflix beginning July 18. The partnership will also expand into original long-form programming, with a new Netflix series scheduled to premiere in 2027.

Outside of Netflix, New Line Cinema’s Mortal Kombat II is heading to streaming. The film will make its global streaming debut exclusively on HBO Max on July 24 before premiering on HBO the following evening. Starring Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada, the release will also include an American Sign Language version performed by ASL dubber Justin Perez and directed by Rosa Lee Timm. The ASL presentation will feature Visual Vernacular, a highly expressive storytelling style that combines American Sign Language, mime, facial expressions and body movement to create a visually immersive experience.

Independent cinema also scored a significant distribution milestone this week. Greenwich Entertainment acquired U.S. distribution rights to A Girl Unknown, the feature directorial debut from Chinese filmmaker Zou Jing. The coming-of-age drama premiered in the Critics’ Week section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it received both the FIPRESCI Prize and the Gan Foundation Award. It also captured the CineVision prize for Best International Film by an Emerging Director at the Munich International Film Festival. Following a North American festival run this fall, Greenwich plans to release the film theatrically in early 2027. Spanning 15 years during China’s One Child policy, the film follows an adopted young woman whose life unfolds across four households and three identities while examining the emotional complexities of adoption and belonging.

Meanwhile, new audience engagement data from JustWatch suggests Emmy nominations do not always translate into the strongest viewer interest. Measuring user activity—including watchlist additions, offer clickouts and engagement during the week following each nominated series’ season finale—the report found that Apple TV+’s Widow’s Bay generated the highest audience buzz despite receiving fewer nominations than both The Pitt and Hacks. Apple TV+ also enjoyed its strongest overall Emmy showing, with nominees performing well across both drama and comedy categories. In the limited series race, All Her Fault topped audience engagement rankings despite earning fewer nominations than Beef and DTF St. Louis, reinforcing that viewer enthusiasm and awards recognition do not always move in lockstep.
