History Lesson: Juneteenth Honors Freedom and Resilience

Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, commemorates the day when enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned they were free. Although President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, enforcement was uneven throughout the Confederacy during the Civil War. It was not until June 19, 1865, that Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and issued General Order No. 3, announcing the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas.

The holiday’s name combines “June” and “nineteenth.” For generations, African American communities celebrated Juneteenth with parades, family gatherings, prayer services, music, and educational events. In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, officially recognized as Juneteenth National Independence Day.

Today, Juneteenth serves as both a celebration of freedom and a time to reflect on the continuing pursuit of equality, justice, and opportunity in America.
