A wave of recent film announcements spans major festival premieres, new theatrical releases, and high-profile directorial debuts, signaling a dynamic season across the industry.
Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. distribution rights to The Friend’s House Is Here, written, directed, and produced by Maryam Ataei and Hossein Keshavarz. The film premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received the Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast. Shot in secret in Tehran, the story follows two young women navigating an underground art scene while protecting their community. The film is slated for a nationwide theatrical release this fall.
Roadside Attractions and Saban Films have acquired North American rights to BUDDY, the wildly original theatrical feature debut from the deranged mind of fan favorite Casper Kelly. Produced by BoulderLight Pictures and Low Spark Films, in association with Sipur Studios and Substance, the film premiered in the Midnight section at the Sundance Film Festival and the Festival Favorites section at SXSW, where it captivated audiences and quickly emerged as a must-see, genre-bending horror standout. BUDDY will open exclusively in theatrical wide release on September 4, 2026.
In theatrical releases, TUNER, directed by Daniel Roher, will open in limited theaters on May 22 before expanding nationwide on May 29. Starring Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman, the film follows a New York piano tuner whose heightened sense of hearing draws him into the world of safecracking, blending elements of drama, romance, and suspense.
On the streaming front, Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender will premiere June 25, 2026 on Netflix. The series continues the journey of Aang and his companions as they seek to restore balance to a world threatened by the Fire Nation, with the new season focusing on their mission to enlist the Earth King in their fight against Fire Lord Ozai.
Meanwhile, 5000 Broadway Productions has announced a feature film adaptation of Octet, to be directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The project marks Miranda’s next directorial effort following tick, tick…BOOM!, with Dave Malloy adapting his own musical for the screen. Casting details have not yet been announced.
At the Cannes Film Festival, John Travolta will present his first film as a director, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, in the Cannes Premiere Selection. The Apple Original Films production, adapted from Travolta’s 1997 book, will have its world premiere at the Palais des Festivals. The project reflects Travolta’s long-standing passion for aviation.
Also at Cannes, Carla Simón has been named President of the Short Films and La Cinef Jury for the festival’s 79th edition. She will be joined by Park Ji-Min, Ali Asgari, Salim Kechiouche, and Magnus von Horn. The jury will award the Short Film Palme d’Or and La Cinef prizes, recognizing emerging and student filmmakers.
