In January 2025, a catastrophic wildfire erupted near Pacific Palisades, swiftly spreading amid severe drought and strong Santa Ana winds.
The blaze, first reported on January 7, ultimately burned about 23,448 acres, destroyed nearly 6,837 structures, and claimed 12 lives before being contained nearly three weeks later on January 31.
Today, Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement following the arrest by federal authorities in connection with the fire — calling it an important step toward justice and closure:
“More than nine months ago, our city faced one of the most devastating periods our region had ever seen … Our heroic firefighters fought the blaze valiantly … As we are working tirelessly to bring Angelenos home, we are also working towards closure and towards justice — and today is a step forward in that process.”
Bass thanked the U.S. Department of Justice, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Los Angeles Police Department, and the Los Angeles Fire Department — all of which participated in the multiagency task force leading to the arrest.
She also said the city would soon release the LAFD’s after-action report.
