Alex Honnold to Free Solo Taipei 101 in Live Netflix Special

Free solo climber Alex Honnold, best known for his historic rope-less ascent of Yosemite’s El Capitan — a climb captured in the Academy Award®-winning documentary Free Solo — is reaching new heights. Netflix has announced a live special set to premiere in early 2026, featuring Honnold as he attempts to scale Taipei 101 without ropes or safety equipment.

Standing at 1,667 feet tall with 101 floors, Taipei 101 is Taiwan’s tallest skyscraper and currently the 11th tallest building in the world. Honnold’s daring climb will mark the first time anyone has attempted to free solo one of the tallest buildings on the planet.

The two-hour live event, titled Skyscraper Live, will stream worldwide on Netflix.

“Skyscraper Live will kick off 2026 as our latest global must-watch live event,” said Brandon Riegg, Vice President of Nonfiction Series & Sports at Netflix. “Watching Alex Honnold free climb Taipei 101 will be an adrenaline-inducing spectacle that you can’t look away from. Everyone will be talking about it as it happens.”

The special is produced by Plimsoll Productions Limited (part of ITV Studios), with Al Berman serving as showrunner and executive producer. Executive producers include Alex Honnold, Grant Mansfield, James Smith, Alan Eyres, and Jonathan Retseck, with Joe DeMaio directing.

Honnold, considered one of the greatest free soloists in history, has spent his career redefining the limits of climbing by scaling the world’s most challenging faces without ropes, harnesses, or margin for error. His next challenge: transforming one of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers into his vertical stage.
