Ed Asner, ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ Actor Dies At Age 91

Ed Asner, who was best known for portraying newsman Lou Grant on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," died Sunday morning, according to his publicist.

Asner was was surrounded by family in Los Angeles, publicist Charles Sherman said.

Asner won five of his seven Emmy Awards for playing Grant on TMTM Show. Three as best supporting actor in a comedy series for "Mary Tyler Moore" and two for lead actor in a drama for "Lou Grant."

He also won Emmys for his work in the 1976 mini-series "Rich Man, Poor Man" and the 1977 miniseries "Roots."

His Grant character got his own spin-off in  "Lou Grant," a one-hour drama that ran from 1977 to 1982.

Throughout his career, Asner appeared on "Modern Family," "ER," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," "The X-Files," "The Good Wife," "Grace and Frankie," "Hot in Cleveland" and "Cobra Kai." 

For the newer generation, Asner is known as the beloved widower and retired balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen in Pixar's 2009 heartwarming film, "Up."
