Reports: “Most Wanted” Richard Matt Found & Shot By Police, David Sweat Still On The Run

Three weeks ago, two convicted killers escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y.

35 year-old, David Sweat and 48 year-old, Richard Matt used power tools to saw their way through their prison cells. Their escape has caused a nationwide manhunt, placing Sweat and Matt on the U.S. Marshals’ “15 Most Wanted” list of fugitives.

According to CNN reports, on Friday a driver called 911 in Malone N.Y. with a tip from a camper. Sources say that Richard Matt has been shot and killed after a shootout with law enforcement. Currently, there are “no eyes” on David Sweat, however, authorities are in pursuit.

Richard Matt has escaped multiple times in the past. In 1986, Matt broke out of the Erie County jail. He then spent three years in prison for attempted burglary, after being released in 1997. Later that year, he was arrested for beating, torturing, killing and dismembering his former boss, William Rickerson. Prior to his trial, Matt fled to Mexico, where he killed yet another man. He was then extradited to the U.S. and sentenced to 25 years to life. 

David Sweat broke into a Pennsylvania home in 2002. He fatally shot Kevin Tarsia, a Broome County, New York Sheriff’s Deputy after firing 15 rounds. Sweat was sentenced to life in prison.
