Last week, Sony Pictures Entertainment was the victim of a major hacking incident. A handful of Sony films were leaked via Bit Torrent, including the upcoming “Annie,” “Still Alice,” etc. The hackers have taken the identity of Guardians of Peace or #GOP.
Many reports are connecting the reason for the hacking with the controversial and soon-to-be released Sony film, “The Interview,” starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, about U.S. spies who hire a television host and his producer to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
In response to the film, North Korean officials said, “a film about the assassination of a foreign leader mirrors what the US has done in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Ukraine.”
After SPE’s computer systems were taken offline, reports suspect that North Korea had something to do with the cyber attack.
The Wall Street Journal reported that researchers investigating the hack have discovered the code to be similar, if not the same code used in a March 2013 attack on a series of South Korean banks and broadcasters.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the investigation is now in the hands of the FBI.
