A tragic attack on a west Jerusalem Synagogue took place on Tuesday. Several were injured and four victims were killed, including U.S. citizens Aryeh Kupinsky, Cary William Levine, and Mosheh Twersky.
According to police, the attack was caused by two Palestinians wielding a gun, an ax and a meat cleaver. As reported by USA Today, the incident was the latest violent event in the tense city where relations between Arabs and Jews have been deteriorating for months over a contested shrine holy to both Jews and Muslims.
President Obama said in a statement, “I strongly condemn today’s terrorist attack on worshipers at a synagogue in Jerusalem. There is and can be no justification for such attacks against innocent civilians.”
He added, “At this sensitive moment in Jerusalem, it is all the more important for Israeli and Palestinian leaders and ordinary citizens to work cooperatively together to lower tensions, reject violence, and seek a path forward towards peace.”
