An interim report from the Vatican, under Pope Francis, has ignited controversy. This is the first time the Catholic Church have made such statements regarding the gay community.
The report says that gays and lesbians “need to be welcomed and accompanied with patience and delicacy” and that they “have gifts and qualities to offer to the Christian community.” Church leaders added, “homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer the Christian community.”
The Vatican documents do not make a solid decision one way or another regarding the matter. On one hand the church says, “unions between people of the same sex cannot be considered on the same footing as matrimony between man and woman,” and points out “the moral problems connected to homosexual unions.”
On the other hand they state, “there are cases in which mutual aid to the point of sacrifice constitutes a precious support in the life of the partners.”
We do not know exactly where the Vatican and Pope stand, but one thing is for sure: the world is changing.
