Many of us will never know what it’s like to not have access to education. Thousands of young adults around the world yearn to learn and continue their schooling, but not everyone has financial support. Meet Yona, a remarkable young man who has spent his childhood trying to better the community around him, including volunteering to teach English to young orphans during his school breaks and helping to found the Good Hope Support Organization (NGO). He has battled the obstacles of losing his mother, being brought up with an abusive step-father and living with little to no financial means. At 17, he served as a translator to American student, Michelle Hamilton during her graduate research study. Today, Michelle still follows Yona’s schooling goals and is helping to spread the word so that he can move onto higher education.
Living in a volatile corner of the globe, Yona’s plans to get an education and change the world seemed like wishful thinking. With the generosity of many supporters and his fearless determination, Yona has flourished in his first year of school – achieving top scores among his classmates. He was also selected by his peers to be a co-director of the Economics Association of Students. (To follow Yona’s life at school, check out his facebook page.) Yona has consistently scored in the top 1% of all Tanzanian students, was elected student body president in high school, and speaks three languages (Swahili, English, German).
Yona will begin his second year at the competitive Mzumbe University’s Economics and Policy Planning program in October. Mzumbe University is a school geographically close to the Tanzania’s largest city, Dar es Salaam.
We are asking for your help and support in spreading the word to meet the financial goal for Yona’s tuition, food, living expenses and health insurance for the year. The goal is: $2,800.
