Just days after the Sochi Olympics came to an end in Russia, more conflict arises in Ukraine. The bloody protests have ceased, but now the concern is whether Russian troops will move in on Ukraine with an “armed invasion.” By the looks of TV news reports, Russian forces are believed to have landed nearby to take action.
President Obama has spoken out after Vice President Biden met with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Friday to express the Obama administration’s concerns.
Obama said, “Russia has an historic relationship with Ukraine — but any violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty — would be equally destabilizing.” He added that the US government “stands for the democratic future of Ukraine.”
Earlier on Friday, Ukraine’s interior ministry accused Russia of a “military invasion and occupation” saying Russian troops have taken up positions around a coast guard base and two airports on its strategic Crimea peninsula.
Ukraine’s parliament also sent an urgent plea to the U.N. Security Council for a meeting on the crisis.
