Scott McKenzie, Renowned Flower-Power Singer Dies at 73

1960’s singer-songwriter, Scott McKenzie died this week in his home in Silver Lake, CA at the age of 73. McKenzie, who had been battling Guillain Barre syndrome for two years, was best known for his worldwide hit, “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair). This soft tune perfectly punctuated the zeitgeist of the peace-loving flower-power movement. The gentle melody reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967 and became an instant #1 hit in the UK and several other countries. McKenzie, who toured with The Mamas & The Papas and helped pen the Beach Boys’ #1 hit, “Kokomo,” will be sincerely missed.
