Few horror franchises have evolved as boldly—or as unpredictably—as Evil Dead, a series that began with Sam Raimi’s scrappy, independently made The Evil Dead (1981) and grew into a genre-defining blend of terror, slapstick, and cult mythology. What started in a remote cabin with then-unknown actor Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams quickly distinguished itself through its frenetic camerawork, practical effects, and unrelenting tone, only to pivot with Evil Dead II (1987) and Army of Darkness (1992) into a self-aware, comedy-infused expansion of its own lore. Decades later, the franchise proved its staying power with a reinvention in Evil Dead (2013), embracing a more visceral, modern horror sensibility under director Fede Álvarez, before continuing its evolution with Evil Dead Rise (2023), which shifted the chaos from isolated woods to an urban setting. Across more than four decades, Evil Dead has remained a rare horror property that constantly reinvents itself while retaining the raw, inventive spirit that made it a cult phenomenon in the first place.
