Join HWAC’s Quarantine Canines Virtual April Marathon

Yesterday’s extension of a mandatory quarantine also signals the cancellation of many local events, activities, and personal monthly goals.

Fortunately, as any animal-lover can attest to, there is almost nothing that can’t be achieved with the support of a furry side-kick.  To celebrate this bond, Helen Woodward Animal Center invites the community to grab a favorite paw-tner and take to the streets.  This is YOUR month to run a marathon and save lives!

Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Quarantine Canines Virtual Marathon runs April 1st to 30th and includes fresh air, your pup, prizes, and the joy of saving lives.

Helen Woodward Animal Center’s mission of “people helping animals, animals helping people” has never felt more vital.  As people lose jobs, and self-isolation becomes a reality, pets continue to reveal their overwhelming capacity to comfort, nurture and love, reminding us of their importance.  Unfortunately, as the COVID-19 crisis gains momentum, orphan pets have fewer and fewer venues available for rescue.  Despite the current obstacles, Helen Woodward Animal Center is continuing life-saving transfers from organizations around the country that need our help now more than ever. Just this past week, the Center received 32 puppies and dogs from an overcrowded shelter and without Helen Woodward Animal Center, these beautiful animals would have lost their lives.

In addition to the work being done for Adoptions, the Center has not only maintained the AniMeals pet food delivery to homebound seniors, the elderly, and disabled veterans, but has begun a brand new effort called AniMeals Relief to help our pet-loving community members who are struggling to cover the cost of pet food after losing their job due to the virus outbreak.

Now animal-lovers who wish to support these efforts can take part in a RUN-derful way!  Helen Woodward Animal Center invites the community to participate in the Quarantine Canines Virtual Marathon by setting a goal to walk or run with your dogs a total of 26.2 miles during the month of April.   Miles can be tracked on any free run/walk app.  An on-line costume contest adds to the fun!  Best of all, when you register for the virtual marathon or costume contest, a fundraising page will automatically be created to share with friends and family and encourage support for individual campaigns. Top fundraising prizes include round trip airfare on Southwest Airlines, a Custom Pet Portrait by Olivia Lara, and more.

Marathon entry for the Quarantine Canines Virtual Marathon is $25 and includes an event t-shirt.  Entry for the virtual costume contest is $5.  Those who wish to give without running can sign up on the registration page.  For more information or to register, visit https://my.animalcenter.org/Virtual-Marathon or call 858-756-4117 x 350.

Let's show the love for pets who offer comfort, buffer our stress and boost our happiness during this unprecedented time.
