There are some nights where you go to a show with expectations, and then there are nights where you simply show up, let the music take over, and see where the night takes you. My night with Wax Motif at Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles was definitely the latter.
I arrived around 7:30 p.m., with the show already underway. And honestly, I didn’t even make it to the box office before I was dancing. Walking toward the entrance, the music was already setting the tone for the night, and it was pretty clear that I was in for a good time.
This was my first time attending a show at Grand Park, so, as I usually do when experiencing a new venue, I came in with an open mind. The setting was more intimate than some of the larger events I’ve attended, but that didn’t stop the crowd from showing up. There was a great turnout, and the energy throughout the park was exactly what you want from a night centered around dance music.
People were dancing, having a good time, and singing along to some of the tracks. There was an easygoing energy throughout the crowd that made it difficult not to get caught up in it. Nobody seemed to be standing around waiting for something to happen.
And when it comes to production, Insomniac continues to understand that the details matter. Whether an event is massive or more intimate, the production never feels like an afterthought. The lighting and lasers were especially good throughout the night, adding to the atmosphere without taking away from the music. Combined with the crowd and the setting, the entire environment felt infectious.
Wax Motif took the stage last, and this was my first time seeing one of his sets live. I went into the night curious about what I was going to get, and I definitely did not leave disappointed. Right out of the gate, Wax Motif brought the energy. Rather than easing into the set, he immediately established a momentum that continued to build as the night went on. The intensity kept rising, and so did the energy from the crowd.
For me, this was one of those sets where I wasn’t interested in standing there trying to dissect every transition or figure out what was coming next. I was there to dance. So that’s exactly what I did.
There’s something refreshing about experiencing a DJ set that doesn’t require you to overthink it. You hear the music, feel the beat, look around and see everyone else moving with you, and suddenly you’re completely in the moment. Wax Motif created that kind of environment at Grand Park.
Leaving the show, I was on a high. Part of that may have been because, mentally, I’m still at Nocturnal Wonderland. The festival may be over, but apparently I’m not quite ready to come down from that experience just yet. Wax Motif wasn’t part of Nocturnal Wonderland, but seeing him at Grand Park turned out to be a pretty great way to keep that excitement going.
From the crowd and atmosphere to the production and Wax Motif’s high energy set, everything came together for the kind of night that reminded me why I keep coming back to live music. Sometimes you don’t need a complicated reason to enjoy a show. Sometimes you just need good music, a crowd ready to dance, and a place where you can let yourself get lost in it.
