The streamer announced that the drama will return for a second season, with Claire Danes reprising her Emmy-nominated role as Aggie Wiggs. Danes will also return as an executive producer.
Howard Gordon, who served as executive producer, writer and co-showrunner on the first season, will return alongside Daniel Pearle as co-showrunner and executive producer.
The renewal follows a strong debut for the series. Season 1 premiered at No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 shows list, reached the Top 10 in 88 countries and generated 43 million views during its first seven weeks.
The series also became a major awards-season contender, receiving 21 nominations across industry honors and winning two Emmy Awards. Matthew Rhys took home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, while the show also won Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special for its original dramatic score.
“We always told ourselves we’d only do a second season of The Beast in Me if we found a story that was worthy of the first — and I’m thrilled to say we found it,” Gordon said. “We loved making this show and our audience seemed to love watching it, so we’re enormously grateful to Jinny Howe and Netflix, and to Karey Burke and 20th Television for giving us the chance to get the band back together and do it again.”
Netflix Head of Scripted Series Jinny Howe said the first season “captivated global audiences” and praised the performances, including Rhys’ Emmy-winning work.
“We are incredibly proud of what Howard Gordon, Gabe Rotter, and the entire cast and crew achieved,” Howe said. “We can’t wait for audiences to see what Howard and Daniel Pearle have in store for the next season.”
Along with the renewal, Netflix announced a new creative partnership with Gordon. Under the agreement, he will develop new series exclusively for Netflix through his Teakwood Lane Productions banner.
The Beast in Me was created by Gabe Rotter and is produced by 20th Television. Executive producers include Gordon, Pearle, Antonio Campos, Caroline Baron, Amy Lippman, Rotter, Conan O’Brien, David Kissinger, Jeff Ross, Danes and Jodie Foster.
Netflix has not yet revealed the Season 2 storyline, additional cast members or premiere date, with further details expected at a later time.
