Something about traveling deep into the Amazon rainforest has just never sat right with me. Sure, the scenery is beautiful, but I can’t help but think about all the wildlife lurking beyond what we can see, both known and unknown. That’s where Beware Boiúna comes in. The film follows a small team of five who venture deep into the Amazon to provide medical care to a remote village. Three medical professionals, along with their captain and boat mechanic, arrive on the island and immediately get to work tending to the local community. After a long day, the group heads to a local pub for some drinks, where they cross paths with a team of surveyors. Tensions quickly rise between the two groups, leading to a brief confrontation before the medical team leaves for their next destination. What they don’t know is that something else is already watching, waiting, and ready to make its presence known.
From there, Beware Boiúna takes that unsettling feeling of being somewhere completely unfamiliar and turns it into something much more dangerous. The isolation of the Amazon becomes a character of its own, creating a constant sense that the team is never truly alone. And when Boiuna finally makes her presence known, let me just say… she is HUGE. Ever seen Anaconda? Think about four times bigger. No exaggeration. She is absolutely massive. As a horror obsessed fan, I found myself caught off guard by quite a few jump scares, and the gore definitely had me a little squeamish. The acting was superb, and the pacing worked really well. The film never felt rushed, giving you enough time to become invested in the story while taking in everything that was unfolding. The cinematography was also amazing and really captured the beauty and isolation of the Amazon. As for the ending, I won’t spoil it, but it definitely wasn’t what I expected and left just enough room to make you wonder what could come next. Overall, Beware Boiúna delivered the kind of creature feature that kept me engaged from beginning to end.
