June Jubilee returns to Los Angeles Public Library

The Los Angeles Public Library is set to celebrate community, culture, and storytelling with the return of its Fourth Annual June Jubilee on Saturday, June 13. The free, family friendly event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Central Library, located at 630 W. Fifth St. in downtown Los Angeles.

Designed as a day of connection, learning, and cultural celebration, the June Jubilee will feature inspiring speakers, live entertainment, hands on arts and crafts activities, and a variety of workshops focused on health, genealogy, technology, and more.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early for a special African inspired Opening Ceremony. The ceremony will include a water libation blessing that honors ancestors and the community, accompanied by vibrant dancers and drummers who will welcome attendees with spirit, joy, and cultural pride.

New for this year’s celebration, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in CommUnity Archives interviews. The initiative invites community members to share personal stories, preserve family legacies, and record oral histories that reflect life and experiences in Los Angeles, creating a lasting record for future generations.

The June Jubilee is curated by Changing Tones, one of the Los Angeles Public Library’s racial equity and inclusion groups. The event was created to honor and share with all Angelenos the contributions and culture of African Americans throughout the history of Los Angeles and the nation.

By bringing together education, entertainment, and community engagement, the Fourth Annual June Jubilee continues its mission of celebrating heritage, fostering connection, and amplifying the stories that help shape Los Angeles.

Celebration Highlights include:

Opening African Water Libation Ceremony – Featuring exhilarating drumming, energetic dancers, and a powerful original poem dedicated to African Americans by Poet Erika K. Jones, who created it especially for the event.

CommUnity Archives Project – Los Angeles holds an infinite number of unique stories that shape our communities and city. At June Jubilee, Angelenos will have access to resources to begin preserving these stories, with the option to add to a growing community archive at LAPL.

Attendees can also participate in informative workshops on health, wellness, genealogy, and financial literacy, engage with speakers, enjoy live entertainment, and more.
