As January marks National Walk Your Dog Month, a new nationwide study highlights which U.S. cities are leading the way when it comes to dog park access, quality, and overall canine-friendly living. LawnStarter’s 2026 ranking evaluated 100 cities across multiple data points, offering a snapshot of where urban dogs — and their humans — can enjoy the most space to run, socialize, and play.
The rankings focus on practical access and real-world use, weighing factors such as the number of dog parks per capita, availability of private dog park rentals, user ratings, local search interest, and climate considerations. The result is a mix of midsize cities and major metros that prioritize outdoor space and pet-friendly infrastructure.

Boise claims the top spot thanks to its standout access to dog parks, offering approximately nine dog parks per 100,000 residents — the highest concentration among all cities studied. The city’s balance of open space, community planning, and consistent park quality helped secure its No. 1 ranking.
While New York City did not land in the top 10 overall, it stood out in a key category, leading the nation in the number of top-rated dog parks. With 19 parks rated 4.5 stars or higher, New York nearly doubled the next closest city, Portland, highlighting how quality can sometimes outweigh sheer quantity.
Demand also played a role in the rankings. Denver residents showed the highest level of interest in dog parks during 2025 based on local search data, signaling a growing appetite for dedicated canine spaces even in cities that may not rank at the top overall.
Together, the 2026 rankings reflect a broader shift in how cities are designing public spaces — with dogs firmly considered part of the urban lifestyle. Whether through expansive off-leash areas, well-maintained neighborhood parks, or innovative private park options, these cities are setting the pace for dog-friendly living in the year ahead.
