The Rise, Fall and Rise of Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has had a dramatic, storied run—rising to become one of fashion’s most talked-about spectacles before going dark, and now returning with renewed energy and intent.

The first show took place in August 1995 at New York’s Plaza Hotel. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, the show became a media phenomenon—webcasts, celebrity performances, extravagant sets, and the winged “Angels” all helped build its mythos.

After years of declining TV viewership, criticism of narrow beauty standards, and public controversies, Victoria’s Secret canceled the show in 2019. In 2023, rather than resurrecting the traditional runway, the brand launched Victoria’s Secret: The Tour ’23—a documentary-style global special—marking a strategic shift in how to present itself.

The runway show officially returned in 2024, reclaiming its place in fashion’s calendar. In 2025, it continues with fresh energy and focus: more inclusive casting, an emphasis on celebrating diverse beauty, and big names behind the scenes—like Dame Pat McGrath serving as head makeup artist.

This year, the show’s beauty narrative reinforces that shift: luminous, modern skin; glowy finishes; and a celebration of each woman’s unique radiance.

Pat McGrath gives us a look at how you can achieve the makeup glow:

Dame Pat McGrath served as the show’s head makeup artist. For this year’s beauty look, she focused on creating luminous, modern skin, with an emphasis on celebrating the beauty of every woman who walked the runway. To achieve the aliengelic glow that Pat McGrath is famously known for, she finished off each look with a spray of the iconic Skin Fetish: Glass 001 Legendary Glow Setting Spray and glazed the lips with LUST: Gloss in shade ‘Earth Angel’.
