Grab the dog treats and dust off your old basketball — the Air Bud legacy is bounding back onto the big screen, and this time, your golden retriever could be the one chasing the ball and the spotlight.

This summer, Cineverse and Air Bud Entertainment are launching a nationwide doggy casting call to find the next four-legged star to take the leash in Air Bud Returns, the reboot of one of Hollywood’s most beloved family franchises. Written and directed by Air Bud creator Robert Vince, the new film is set to hit theaters in summer 2026—and yes, there will be sports, heart, and a whole lot of tail-wagging.

The Golden Opportunity of a Lifetime

Have a golden retriever with main character energy? Think your dog could dunk, dribble, and melt hearts? Now’s their chance to shine. Starting this month, pet parents can submit their purebred pups at www.airbud.com/thesearch for a chance to become the new face (and paws) of the franchise.

Even if your pup doesn’t land the lead role, there are plenty of prizes to fetch—Air Bud jerseys, signed merch, and even a trip to the Hollywood premiere. Because let’s face it, all dogs are stars.

Back to Fernfield

In Air Bud Returns, we meet Jacob, a 12-year-old who’s grieving the loss of his father and adjusting to a new life in Fernfield. When he finds an old VHS copy of the original Air Bud movie, it sparks something inside him. Soon after, he befriends a neglected golden retriever he names Buddy—and the rest? Let’s just say the court won’t know what hit it.

With a team of misfit kids, a shared love of the game, and the spirit of believing in yourself, Jacob and Buddy aim for the championship. Spoiler: it’s not just about winning—it’s about heart.

Sit, Stay, Act

To ensure each wag and woof is top-tier, ABE is teaming up with Birds & Animals Unlimited, the Hollywood powerhouse behind many of the industry’s best animal performances. So yes, your dog will have some A-list coaching.

This marks the eighth film collaboration between director Robert Vince and top animal trainer Mark Forbes. If anyone knows how to turn your backyard fetcher into a silver screen legend, it’s these two.

A Legacy Worth Fetching

Air Bud isn’t just a dog. He’s a cultural icon. He played basketball, football, soccer, baseball, and volleyball. He raised pups. He saved Christmas. And now, he’s ready to inspire a whole new generation.

So if your furry best friend has what it takes—camera-ready fur, undeniable charm, and the ability to make a jump shot—submit their close-up today.

Because when it comes to Air Bud, the only rule is: there are no rules that say a dog can’t be a movie star.
