The 1970s Sofa That Stood the Test of Time

If you know anything about furniture, you would agree with me that not much compares to the craftsmanship of the furniture companies from the ’70s. At the time when I acquired my YO-YO Brunati sofa from Italy, I thought it was outrageously expensive. The price was close to $10,000.00. The owner of the showroom told me to look at it as an investment. “This couch will last you forever if you take good care of it,” she said, and I must admit, this was true. I could not wait for the Yo-Yo couch to get to Los Angeles. I still can remember the day it was delivered to my home. I was so excited. This couch was elegant, a real jewel.

The ’70s reintroduced functionality, clean lines, and geometric forms which emerged in the ’20s and ’30s and are still very present today in furniture. In the past five decades, I have reupholstered it three times. 2025 will have to be the fourth time. I decided that the time had come to give it some TLC—and by that, I mean finding the company that could meet my expectations. I proceeded to call around to find a company that could do the job. I must have spoken to a dozen companies—one more outrageous than the other—with no rhyme or reason.

I thought that perhaps I should look at purchasing a new one. Looking around, it was in the $12,000 to $15,000 range—or simply a mediocre sofa that would not last long. My mind was made up: I needed to find the perfect artisans who had pride in their craft. It took a bit, but I found it.

If you live in Los Angeles and need this kind of work, I urge you to call EDC Custom Made Upholstery. The company belongs to two brothers, Eric and Jorge; they did a splendid job in record time for a reasonable amount. I cannot say enough about them. Before you decide to buy a new couch, love seat, cushions, or even outdoor furniture—which I can assure you will never be as good as what you have if its high quality furniture—contact them. Not only do they do an outstanding job, but they are also very nice.
