Rich Strike, the horse of trainer Eric Reed and jockey Sonny Leon, was a last minute addition to the 2022 Kentucky Derby. It was just Friday morning, one day before the race that Rich Strike hit the jackpot on the also-eligible list. Another horse was scratched and Rich Strike stepped up to the plate.
Rich Strike was bred by the all-time leading breeder in Derby history, the legendary Calumet Farm.
In the end, Rich Strike pulled off a shocking 80-1 upset of Saturday’s 148th Run for the Roses.
At just around the 2:00 minute mark, Rich Strike made headway, passing the two who had lead the majority of the Derby. Rich Strike sped up just before the finish, ahead of Epicenter who took third place, and Zandon who finished third.
