Weekend Movie Releases: ‘Split,’ ‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage’ & More

Check out our thoughts on this week's movie releases. What suits your fancy?

Writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan teams up once again with producer Jason Blum for his latest release, 'Split.'

The thriller delves into the mysterious recesses of one man’s fractured mind and his dissociative identity disorder. Shyamalan seems to have taken an interest in mental illness. In his previous film, "The Visit," the filmmaker explored a serious form of dementia known as "sundown syndrome."

In "Split," James McAvoy portrays Kevin, who has revealed 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley). While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being. A new personality emerges that yearns to dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.

The film is an incredible vehicle for McAvoy's outstanding acting skills. Stepping into the shoes of multiple personalities, at times his performance is reminiscent of Michael Keaton's in "Multiplicity."
