Rio Olympics: Day #1 Highlights In Swimming, Volleyball, etc.

olympics swimming rioThe first full day of the 2016 Rio Olympics featured swimming, gymnastics, beach volleyball, soccer, tennis, and basketball.

NBC has all of the live coverage and updates. Check out some of the highlights:

SWIMMING

American Chase Kalisz won the silver medal in the 400m IM. Analyst Rowdy Gaines said, “What a run for this young man…he beat his best time by another second and a half from the prelims, so he’s gone basically three seconds faster than he ever has in his life.

Other highlights:

Australian Mack Horton won the Gold in the 400m free.

Hungarian Katinka Hosszu, known as the "Iron Lady," broke a world record in the women’s 400m IM.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Switzerland-China women’s preliminary-round match: the match point was reversed and replayed, and eventually won by China.

GYMNASTICS

Carli Lloyd had a game-winning goal in the U.S. women’s 1-0 win vs. France.

TENNIS –

American Venus Williams lost to Belgian Kirsten Flipkens in women’s singles. Analyst Rennae Stubbs said about Flipkens’ win, “She brought the crowd into it with the first pumping…and they just surfed their way onto Copacabana beach with her.”
