Drake announced the news on his Twitter account Wednesday, tweeting to his 14.7 million followers that he was “honored” to be this year’s emcee. The ESPYs, which celebrate the past year in sports, will take place Wednesday, July 16 at 9 p.m. ET from the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live and broadcast on ESPN. To celebrate the big announcement, Drake was a guest on ESPN’s “Kia NBA Countdown” show on Wednesday night, where he discussed his game plan for the ESPYs with hosts Bill Simmons, Jalen Rose and Avery Johnson. Drake — who is a global ambassador on the executive committee for his hometown NBA team, the Toronto Raptors — recently wrapped a successful world tour in support of his third studio album, “Nothing Was The Same,” and comes after a stint as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live in January. Recent hosts have included Seth Meyers, Justin Timberlake, Jon Hamm, Rob Riggle, Jimmy Kimmel, LeBron James, Matthew Perry, Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson.
