Today at Sundance, Vimeo launched a $500K program supporting crowdfunded films. Vimeo will review qualifying films on leading crowdfunding platforms such as Indiegogo, Kickstarter and Seed&Spark, and select projects to receive free Vimeo PRO accounts plus an advance for film marketing support in exchange for an exclusive digital premiere window on Vimeo On Demand.
The traditional film distribution model has been disrupted under the influence of digital and Vimeo is leading the movement with already over 5K films on its open platform since the March 2013 launch of Vimeo On Demand. Vimeo’s new crowdfunding program represents the next evolution of this model, answering the question—“how do we market and build an audiences for these films?”
This announcement also comes hot off the heels of Monday’s news around Vimeo’s securing 10% of the films that made their world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival to make their exclusive digital debut on Vimeo On Demand.
