Rock The Weekend 10/12/12-10/14/12

FRIDAY 10/12

A Variety of Bands

Where: The Hotel Café

This Friday, the small intimate L.A. venue known for showcasing quality up and coming or underground bands is hosting a slew of great artists. Come out ready to see some talent up on stage with groups like Bell X1, Goodnight Texas, and Oak & Gorski. This small sultry cafe is the best way to see these kinds of musicians.

Patti Smith

Where: El Rey Theater

Patti Smith is a jack of all trades; singer, songwriter, author, poet, artist, the list goes on and on. Often credited for helping spur the 1970’s punk rock movement in New York City, this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and winner of the National Book Award is coming to Los Angeles this Friday. Don’t miss this original songstress on stage at the Wiltern Theater.

SATURDAY 10/13

OohLaLa!

Where: El Rey Theater

Forget listening to The Black Keys, Arcade Fire, or any other go-to alternative hipster band this weekend. In fact, forget any groups from the North American continent. Throw away the musical crutch, grab your best beret and jump on board the recently docked indie pop rock Francophile boat. This weekend the OohLaLa! festival is coming to L.A. and its bringing the best underground musicians from France. There is no reason not to say “Oui!” to this fantastic French festival.

SUNDAY 10/14

The Smashing Pumpkins

Where: The Gibson Amphitheater

Alternative music is popping up everywhere these days, but to truly understand the genre, you have to appreciate its genesis. Just as this new style was taking its first fledgling steps, The Smashing Pumpkins came on to the scene. Blatantly staring down the rules of musical convention, this group first set the tone for what it meant to really be an alternative to the regular chart-topping types in the early 1990’s. You won’t want to miss these genre-defining founders this Sunday at The Gibson Amphitheater.
