Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman has been declared the winner of the 2026 Los Angeles mayoral race, according to reports.
She has defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in a closely contested election. The results are still unofficial, with ballots continuing to be counted.
According to the latest reported figures from the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder, Raman leads with 51.67% of the vote, representing 405,193 votes, compared with Bass’s 48.33%, or 379,069 votes.
Now the question is: Can Raman take action on the hot button issues:
- Homelessness
- Cost of living
- DWP corruption
- Street repair + infrastructure
This is what she’s promising in the first 100 days:
Raman, an urban planner and graduate of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), represents Los Angeles City Council District 4. She made history in 2020 when she became the first Asian American woman and the first South Asian elected to the Los Angeles City Council. She was reelected to a second term in March 2024.
Before entering public office, Raman served as co-chair of the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council Homelessness Committee and co-founded the SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition, an organization focused on addressing homelessness through community-based efforts.
During her time on the City Council, Raman has focused on expanding affordable housing, improving services for people experiencing homelessness and advancing Los Angeles’ climate goals. She has also advocated for stronger constituent services and neighborhood improvements.
An immigrant to the United States, Raman lives in Silver Lake with her husband, Vali Chandrasekaran, and their young twins, Karna and Kaveri.
