Latest From Cannes: Celebrating 25 Years of The Fast and the Furious

The 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is once again bringing together the biggest names in international cinema on the French Riviera. Running from May 12 through May 23, the 2026 festival has already generated headlines for its star power, major premieres, emotional tributes and a noticeable shift back toward auteur-driven filmmaking.

This year’s festival is being led by jury president Park Chan-wook, the acclaimed South Korean filmmaker behind Oldboy and Decision to Leave. Joining him on the jury are an impressive mix of actors, directors and creatives including Demi Moore, Chloe Zhao, Ruth Negga and Stellan Skarsgård.

One of the most talked-about stories at Cannes 2026 has been the festival’s return to international arthouse cinema. While previous years saw Hollywood studios dominating the Croisette with blockbuster premieres, this year’s lineup has focused heavily on acclaimed global auteurs including Pedro Almodóvar, Asghar Farhadi, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Cristian Mungiu and Ryusuke Hamaguchi.

Among the biggest headlines of the festival so far is John Travolta’s emotional return to Cannes. The actor premiered his directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, alongside daughter Ella Bleu Travolta. He was also surprised with an honorary Palme d’Or recognizing his decades-long contribution to cinema. Travolta quickly became one of the most photographed celebrities at the festival, generating buzz across social media for both his appearance and heartfelt speeches.

Another major moment came with the announcement that Barbra Streisand would receive an honorary Palme d’Or. However, the legendary actress, singer and filmmaker later revealed that she would not attend the closing ceremony due to a knee injury. Festival organizers confirmed that the tribute to her career will still move forward despite her absence.

Peter Jackson was also honored during the opening ceremony, receiving a special honorary Palme d’Or presented by longtime collaborator Elijah Wood.

This year’s official competition lineup includes 22 films competing for the Palme d’Or. Early critical favorites include Pawel Pawlikowski’s Fatherland, Pedro Almodóvar’s Bitter Christmas, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s latest drama and James Gray’s Paper Tiger, starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver.

Several films and documentaries are already generating awards-season buzz. Daniel Auteuil’s When the Night Falls earned strong reactions for its restrained storytelling set during Nazi-occupied France, while documentaries including Maverick: The Epic Adventures of David Lean and The Match have received critical praise.

The festival is also celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Fast and the Furious with a special midnight screening of the original 2001 film, bringing nostalgia and franchise energy back to Cannes.

As of now, the official Palme d’Or and competition winners have not yet been announced, as the closing ceremony is scheduled for May 23. However, critics and industry insiders are closely watching several frontrunners expected to dominate conversations heading into the awards presentation.
