A bold new chapter in one of gaming’s most iconic horror franchises is on the horizon. From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger, known for his work on Weapons and Barbarian, comes a thrilling and terrifying reinvention of Resident Evil, reimagined for a new generation of audiences.
In an all new story, Resident Evil centers on Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself thrust into an action packed and relentless race for survival. Over the course of one fateful and horrifying night, chaos unfolds around him, pulling him deeper into a nightmare he never saw coming. As the tension escalates, Bryan must navigate a world unraveling at every turn, where survival is anything but guaranteed.
While anticipation is building around this fresh take, I was not entirely sold on the trailer. There is a noticeable absence of Milla Jovovich, whose presence helped define earlier adaptations of the franchise. Myself and original fans expected to see Milla, and her absence leaves a lingering question heading into this new chapter. Still, with a new creative vision at the helm, it remains to be seen how audiences and critics will respond once the film arrives in theaters.
The film is directed by Zach Cregger, who also co wrote the screenplay alongside Shay Hatten. Production is led by a team that includes Robert Kulzer, Zach Cregger, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Carter Swan, and Asad Qizilbash. Executive producers include Oliver Berben, Victor Hadida, Richard Wright, and Robert Bernacci.
The cast brings together a compelling ensemble featuring Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser.
Produced by Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film, in association with TriStar Pictures, Resident Evil is set to hit theatres on September 18, 2026. As with any major franchise revival, all eyes will be on its reception, and we will have to see what the critics have to say upon release.
