The democratic party now has two presidential candidates running in 2016. Hillary Clinton and, more recently announced, Bernie Sanders. The 73 year-old US Senator for Vermont announced his intentions for running in an email and confirmed his bid in an interview with Associated Press.

Sanders is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012. His previous 16 years in the House of Representatives make him the longest serving independent member of Congress in American history.

The Vermont Senator told AP, “People should not underestimate me. I’ve run outside of the two-party system, defeating Democrats and Republicans, taking on big-money candidates and, you know, I think the message that has resonated in Vermont is a message that can resonate all over this country.”
