Tributes Set For Prince and George Michael At 59th Grammy Awards

Grammy Awards tributes

The Recording Academy has announced plans to honor the recently passed Prince and George Michael with two separate tribute performances at the upcoming 59th Grammy Awards. Performers will remain under wraps.

"George Michael and Prince were pop icons who showcased rare musical genius and otherworldly charisma," said Neil Portnow, President, CEO of The Recording Academy.

George Michael was a two-time Grammy Award winner and Prince took home seven awards during his lifetime.

"While the primary focus of the Grammy Awards is to celebrate and honor the year's best in music, we consider it our responsibility to tell music's broader story by honoring its legends lostthat's what we strive to achieve with our annual tributes," said Ken Ehrlich, Executive Producer of the Grammy Awards. "While it's nearly impossible to convey the full depth of an artist's cultural impact in a single performance, it's that very challenge that has led us to some of our most memorable Grammy moments."

One of the Grammy Award's most memorable tributes was the 2003 cover of "London Calling" in honor of Joe Strummer. A legendary ensemble stepped to the stage to pay their respects to The Clash's late-frontman.

Here's another #ThrowbackThursday bonus: Prince owning the Grammy stage back in 1985.

The 59th Grammy Awards air live February 12th at 8:00pm/5:00pm ET/PT on CBS. James Corden will host.
