Patriots Dominate Rams For Wire to Wire Victory

The Los Angeles Rams fell 26-10 to the New England Patriots Sunday afternoon. It was all Patriots as quarterback Tom Brady passed Peyton Manning on the NFL’s all time wins list for quarterbacks with his 201st victory.

From the opening kick, New England dominated Los Angeles in every category; the Patriots total yardage was 402, compared to a measly 162 yards for the Rams. The Pats also had possession of the ball for 15 more minutes, and never trailed. With a 4-8 record, it looks like the Rams chance for a playoff berth is slim to none.

As I just told the team, if you want to win football games you need to play all three phases like the Patriots did today,” Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said after the game. “They played good offense, they played good defense and they matched up with us on special teams.” Before the game, news broke that Fisher inked a two year contract extension to return to the sidelines through the 2018 season.

Rookie quarterback Jared Goff remains winless in his first three NFL starts. Of his 161 yards passing, 66 came on a deep ball to Kenny Britt with about a minute remaining. Britt would score on the ensuing goal line possession for the only Los Angeles touchdown. The Rams managed only 33 yards rushing against a solid Patriots defense, while their defense was ineffective against Brady and company. Goff also was unable to read the Patriots defensive calls. “They did a lot of different things. Everything they did I have seen before, it was just never consistent which makes it hard [to read].” Rookie quarterbacks are now 0-8 on the road against New England in the Bill Belichick era.

Goff threw two interceptions, one which was not his fault, the other being a bad decision under pressure. The first came after a missed catch by Lance Kendricks was batted into the air, and the second came when Goff was hit while throwing the ball. Rams punter Johnny Hekker booted five of his eight kicks inside New England’s twenty yard line, including a massive 76 yard punt. He has been the most consistent Ram this season. Expect Hekker to receive Pro Bowl consideration after the season.

The Rams continue their season next week at home against the NFC South leading Atlanta Falcons. Kick off is at 1:25 PST.
