6/6: WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT – 35mm print showing. Tribute to the late Bob Hoskins!

“I’m not bad. I’m just drawn that way.” It’s 1947 Hollywood and Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins), a down-on-his-luck detective, is hired to find proof that the owner of Toontown is playing hanky-panky with femme fatale Jessica Rabbit, wife of cartoon superstar Roger Rabbit. When the owner is found murdered, all fingers point to Roger, and the sinister, power-hungry Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd) is on a mission to bring Roger to justice. A comic mixture of live action and animation, directed by Robert Zemeckis (The Polar Express, Back to the Future).

6/13: FATEFUL FINDINGS – Back by popular demand!

In the grand tradition of The Room comes writer/director/actor Neil Breen’s visionary and passionate Fateful Findings, a mash-up of relationship drama and paranormal-political thriller. Two children come across a magic mushroom that gives them special powers. Years later, Dylan (Breen) has become a computer scientist and acclaimed author, who is hacking top government secrets, living with his pill-popping girlfriend. Mystical, psychiatric and worldly forces rise up to prevent his exposing what he has learned. A brutal car accident reignites Dylan’s paranormal powers, and brings his childhood sweetheart back into his life. Murder, suicide, kidnapping, love, sex, and magic all occur in this hugely entertaining, genre-defying cult classic in the making.

6/20: SOME LIKE IT HOT – 35mm print showing

When Chicago musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a gangland shooting, they quickly board a southbound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne, the two newest—and homeliest—members of an all-girl jazz band. Their cover is perfect…until a lovelorn singer (Marilyn Monroe) falls for “Josephine,” an ancient playboy (Joe E. Brown) falls for “Daphne,” and a mob boss (George Raft) refuses to fall for their hoax! Directed by Billy Wilder (The Apartment).

6/27:      TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (1990) – 35mm print showing. Back by popular demand!

A live-action version of the popular animated TV series. Due to radiation exposure, the four superturtles have mutated into teenagers; now, they live in the New York City sewers, where they eat pizza, talk jive, and learn the tricks of a ninja from their guru, Splinter the Rat. When a group of juvenile delinquents called the Foot Gang start wreaking havoc in the city, our heroes on the half-shell join forces with an intrepid girl reporter to put an end to the gang’s evil ways.

7/4: RETURN TO OZ – 35mm print showing

The second thrilling live-action adventure based on L. Frank Baum’s Oz books finds Dorothy (Fairuza Balk) back in the land of her dreams, where she makes new friends (like Tik Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead and the Gump) and dangerous new enemies (like the ultra-creepy Wheelers, the head-hunting Princess Mombi and the evil Nome King). The yellow brick road isn’t the only thing that’s twisted in this seldom-shown, under-appreciated gem. Nicol Williamson, Jean Marsh and Piper Laurie co-star.

7/11: MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE.

This film follows the same premise of the cable TV series it’s based on: a man named Mike Nelson (Michael J. Nelson), along with two witty robots, is held captive in outer space by mad scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulieu). As an experiment, Forrester subjects them to a barrage of horrible, “cheesy movies.” Nelson and the bots proceed to make fun and crack wise at virtually everything that happens in the film, from the opening to closing credits. In this big-screen version, the film lampooned by the gang is 1955’s This Island Earth, a campy, no-budget film about earthlings who are kidnapped by aliens. But will Mike and his metallic buddies ever find a way to escape from the demented Forrester?

7/18: HOOK – 35mm print showing.

Steven Spielberg directed this delightfully grown-up fairy tale about an adult Peter Pan and his evil nemesis, Captain Hook. Peter Banning (Robin Williams) is a 40-year-old corporate lawyer too busy with his work to notice his family. But when Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) kidnaps his children, he is forced to remember who he really is: Peter Pan. With the help of Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts), he returns to Neverland and leads the Lost Boys in a fight against Hook’s dastardly pirates.

7/25: THE WILD LIFE – Rare screening (not on DVD) 35mm print showing – 30th anniversary showing presented by Cinefile Video.

Cameron Crowe followed his screenwriting debut Fast Times at Ridgemont High with this 1984 comedy-drama, directed by Art Linson.  The film stars Eric Stoltz, Chris Penn, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Rick Moranis, Jenny Wright, Lea Thompson and Randy Quaid.  Watch for cameos by Fear’s Lee Ving, Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood, adult actress Kitten Natividad, and the first film appearance by Sherilyn Fenn.  Filled with classic eighties teen movie elements – dating, partying, growing up – the film also features a rock soundtrack with score by Eddie Van Halen, and songs by Bananarama, Three O’ Clock, Peter Case, and Human League.  The music has never been released on CD, and the film is not available on DVD, making this a rare chance to experience this eighties gem.  “It’s casual.”

8/1: HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE –  Japanese language version with English subtitles

Visionary director Hayao Miyazaki’s (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke) animated adventure brims with imagination, humor, action and romance. Sophie, a teenage girl working in a hat shop, finds her life thrown into turmoil when she is swept off her feet by a handsome but mysterious wizard named Howl, and is subsequently turned into a 90-year-old woman by the Wicked Witch of the Waste. Embarking on an odyssey to lift the curse, she finds refuge in Howl’s magical moving castle. With Sophie’s love and support, Howl risks his life to help bring peace to the kingdom. Based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones. (Fully subtitled)

Every Saturday ‘round midnight:

THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW – With live shadow cast Sins O’ The Flesh!

The longest-running midnight movie of all time stars Tim Curry as the kinky and endearing “transsexual from Transylvania” Dr. Frank N. Furter, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick as his hapless guests Brad and Janet, Meat Loaf as motorcycle-riding rough trade and author Richard O’Brien as the hunchbacked butler Riff Raff. It’s harmless musical fun—a delightful spoof of Hollywood horror movies and Old Dark House melodramas. The Rocky Horror Picture Show was the first—and is still the best—interactive movie experience!
